Kind words

Hi Dominik,

I stumbled across Monocle recently, and was really moved by the elegance of the concept and execution. It's quiet and beautiful in a way that most digital tools have forgotten. You've built something really special.

My partner and I run a tiny technical agency based in SF and Seoul, and it's these pieces of inspiration that really keep us going. Your work has given us some incredible motivation at the end of a long winter.

I think that sometimes in the daily grind of our own agency work, we don't take enough time to give credit to the things that catch our eye and keep us hungry to create great work, so I wanted to make it a point to reach out and let you know the impact it's had on us.

So, thank you.

Cheers,

Cory

Questions

There are other blur apps now. Why Monocle?

Back in early 2025 you couldn't find one, I promise. Every app I tried could only dim the screen, and I wanted something that's not just useful, but looks and feels good too. So I started building Monocle with the help of AI (not by AI!): blur instead of black, switched on with a shake, and an enormous amount of time spent on the details, so it feels like it came with your Mac. A few months later the first blur apps started showing up, built on the same idea. Some went further and borrowed the design too, down to the words (here's one, side by side). That just pushes me to make Monocle better with every update.

Can two apps stay sharp together?

Yes. Put them in an App Group and they stay in focus together, like your notes next to a browser. You can also keep every window of an app sharp, or ignore the apps you never want blurred.

Multiple screens? Stage Manager?

Both. Choose per-screen or global focus across your displays. Stage Manager is detected on its own: your window strip stays visible, or blurs too if you like.

Why not just go fullscreen?

Fullscreen puts one app in a space of its own and hides the rest. Monocle keeps your windows where you left them, just quiet, one shake from coming back. No rearranging, no hunting for windows, and it feels right on a big or ultrawide screen.

Does it track me?

No. Monocle has no analytics. It only talks to Gumroad to check your license and to heyiam.dk to check for updates.
